Automotive Challenge Cup
On 14th and 15th June we took part in the Automotive Challenge Cup, held by Sunsail to raise valuable funds for the automotive charity BEN. BEN exists to provide care, support and advice to those in the industry who need help in times of hardship or distress. Open to anyone working within the automotive industry and taking place in the historic maritime region of Portsmouth, this event is the perfect opportunity to network with other industry professionals while raising funds for a worthy cause.
Wednesday morning we arrived to meet our Skippers who prepared bacon rolls on board and gave us a safety briefing before we took to the sea. We had a full day on the yacht learning how to sail in beautiful sunshine. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and were completely shattered by the end of the day. We then had beers delivered to the yacht along with fresh strawberries and cream, scones and cakes to enjoy. After a brief break we had a Sunsail arranged pre-race regatta where we had a wonderful dinner and had the chance to network with the other automotive contenders, enjoy the band along with the chance to bid on some great prizes for the Ben Automotive Charity.
Thursday morning came and after another lovely prepared breakfast we set sail for the race on much choppier waters than our practice day! We had 5 and 10 minute warnings on the radio with 23 yachts trying to get in position for the start of the race. Once the start sound went, it was all hands on deck. Each race was a very intense hour and lots of hard work, no one fell overboard although Sharron came close, luckily James was there to hold on to her foot! Team work at it's best. The whole team took turns to do each of the jobs and made our way back to base after the final race. During our journey back, the engine failed so we had to be rescued by CVM Group who gave us a tow! We then headed back to Wildwood for the winner announcement along with more refreshments.
Even though we came 22 out of 23 yachts, we all thoroughly enjoyed it, had beautiful weather and all learnt so much. A fantastic team building exercise and for a great cause. Perhaps we will enter again next year!
